Trees That Feed Foundation Expands Haiti Breadfruit Projects

Mary and Mike McLaughlin, co-founders of the Trees That Feed Foundation, recently visited Haiti to promote breadfruit planting projects for food security, reforestation and income generation. They delivered 500 Ma`afala plants from Global Breadfruit (http://www.globalbreadfruit.com). Recipients of the donated trees included three orphanages, a new botanical gardens, watershed restoration groups, other small organizations, and a few interested individuals. The foundation is working closely with Three Angels Children`s Relief and establishing partnerships with new organizations, such as Floresta Haiti, a reforestation organization interested in planting breadfruit trees in rural areas.

While in Haiti, they visited many potential growing areas. They also held a meeting on the grounds of the Hotel Montana in Port au Prince that was attended by close to 30 people, including many young Haitians, to share their knowledge and passion for breadfruit`s potential for Haiti. At the meeting they displayed breadfruit products that are made in Jamaica, Barbados and Indonesia with low tech equipment.

Their goal is to plant 1,000,000 breadfruit trees in Haiti within 10 years.

Breadfruit Festival - March 3 2012 SAVE THE DATE

The Puna `Ulu Festival is sponsored by Ho`oulu Lahui, Kua O Ka La Public Charter School, Hawai`i Homegrown Food Network, the Breadfruit Institute, and Kamehameha Schools.

The festival will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2012 from 9 am - 3 pm at Ho`oulu Lahui, the site of Kua O Ka La Public Charter School at Pu`ala`a, adjacent to the `Ahalanui County Park warm ponds in Puna.

The event is free and open to the public.

Activities will include: a cooking contest, breadfruit trees for sale, presentations on the cultivation and care of `ulu trees, poi pounding, tapa making, activities for the keiki, music all day, and local food featuring breadfruit

The Puna `Ulu Festival is a part of a larger statewide effort to revitalize breadfruit for food security called Ho`oulu ka `Ulu.

Breadfruit (`Ulu) Workshop at Native Food, Native Stories at Bishop Museum

The Breadfruit Institute and the Hawaii Homegrown Food Network Ho`oulu ka `Ulu - Revitalizing Breadfruit in Hawaii, is presenting a breadfruit (`ulu) workshop as part of the Native Food, Native Stories workshop series at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu.

Celebrate all things `ulu in this educational workshop which explores the cultural and botanical aspects of this essential Polynesian food staple through lectures, cultural demonstrations, and an `ulu plate lunch.

Saturday, March 17: 9:00am-2:00pm

9:00 am - Lecture: All about ’ulu and Why it is Good for You with Diane Ragone, PhD
10:00 am - Poi `ulu pounding, `ulu stamping, hula and storytelling

12:00 pm - `Ulu plate lunch and Various cultural demonstrations

Conservation & Potential in the Breadfruit Institute`s Germplasm Repository - A Talk by Dr. Susan J. Murch

Dr. Susan J. Murch has been collaborating on breadfruit research projects with Dr. Diane Ragone since 2003. She will talk about the Breadfruit Germplasm Repository at the National Tropical Botanical Garden. This is the world`s largest, with 324 trees representing more than 120 cultivars from 34 Pacific islands, the Seychelles, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Her research includes developing micropropagation methods, identifying nutrient-rich cultivars, developing new products, and creating new opportunities for conservation and distribution of elite cultivars for food security in the tropics.

"Breadfruit-A Tree of Importance to Hawaii" Video Released

The Breadfruit Institute and Jim Wiseman, DigitalMedia Hawaii/Pacific, recently completed a video entitled "Breadfruit - A Tree of Importance to Hawaii." The video covers breadfruit`s relevance to Hawaii and its connections to other Pacific island cultures, especially Tahiti, Samoa, and Micronesia. Also covered is breadfruit`s value for food security as a delicious and nutritious food; the tree`s aesthetic contribution to urban landscapes; and the work of the Breadfruit Institute to promote the conservation and use of breadfruit for food and reforestation.

This information is relevant to many tropical nations where breadfruit has the potential to play an important role in alleviating hunger, supporting sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, reforestation, and economic development.

American Samoa Delegation Visits Breadfruit Institute

The Governor of American Samoa Togiola Tala Tulafono and the First Lady Mary Taufaasau Togiola, Deputy Assistant to the Governor, Hawaii Office, Sgt Major (USMC ret.) Moeituasivi Filipo Ilaoa, and Papalii Dr. Tusi Avegalio, Director, and Dr. CL Cheshire, Senior Business Development Manager of the Pacific Business Center Program at the Shidler College of Business Administration, University of Hawaii, visited the Breadfruit Institute on Kauai to discuss collaborative breadfruit projects.

American Samoa and Samoa were both severely impacted by a tsunami in 2009 that damaged or destroyed many homes and communities. There is interest in breadfruit replanting projects for food security and economic development.

The Breadfruit Institute conserves 18 breadfruit varieties from Upolu and Savaii Islands.

French Polynesia Delegation Visits Breadfruit Institute

Kalani Teixeira, Minister of Agriculture & Farming from French Polynesia, visited the Breadfruit Institute on Kauai to discuss collaborative breadfruit (`uru) projects. The President of French Polynesia, Oscar Manutahi Temaru, accompanied by the Ministers of Agriculture and Marine Resources, Advisors Hiria Ottino and Teua Temaru, and Hawaii State Senator Kalani English, visited the breadfruit collection at Kahanu Garden in Hana, Maui.

The Institute conserves 51 varieties from French Polynesia in its breadfruit germplasm collection including varieties from Huahine, Moorea, Raiatea, Tahaa, and Tahiti in the Society Islands and Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas Islands

Breadfruit Institute Year in Review - Part 1

Ten countries have received breadfruit plants from Global Breadfruit (http://www.globalbreadfruit.com) as part of the Breadfruit Institute`s Global Hunger Initiative.

In Africa, plants have been shipped to nurseries in Ghana, Mozambique, Nigeria, and Tanzania.

Haiti and Jamaica in the Caribbean, and Honduras and Nicaragua in Central America have plants in nursery and many trees have planted in farmer`s fields, agriculture stations, and orphanages.

Hawaii and Guam round out the list, with homeowners and farmers planting trees.

Tree planting partners include Sustainable Harvest International, Trees That Feed Foundation, ARN Foundation, and the Hunger Alliance of Ghana.

Breadfruit Processing Enterprise

The Breadfruit Institute and Compatible Technology International (CTI)in St. Paul, Minnesota are partnering on a processing enterprise to transform breadfruit into flour. CTI engineers, in conjunction with students from the University of Saint Thomas, have designed a manual processing system--a shredder, dryer, and grinder--that can be used to make breadfruit flour.

The breadfruit processing system will be tested at the Breadfruit Institute in Hawaii to demonstrate the equipment`s functionality and economic viability.

Families and communities planting Ma`afala and other breadfruit varieties from the Breadfruit Institute will have access to a simple means to process breadfruit into flour and generate income.

Breadfruit Dryer Contest

The University of Saint Thomas has announced a contest to select two 2-3 person teams to design, build and deliver a breadfruit drying structure to the National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) in Kauai, Hawaii in March 2012.

A simple, innovative, cost effective, and scalable dryer is sought.

The contest is open to everyone, and the winning teams will be chosen based on the creative capacity of the team and the skill set to build and deliver the dryer to NTBG for use by the Breadfruit Institute in an initiative in collaboration with Compatible Technology International to address critical global food security issues by promoting the use of breadfruit for food and reforestation.

The first and second place teams will win $3,000 and $500 prizes, and both teams will win a trip to Hawaii to demonstrate their design at the National Tropical Botanical Garden.

Teams must send notice of their intent to submit by January 15, 2012 to Camille George at: cmgeorge@stthomas.edu.

Delicious Recipes from the Breadfruit Festival Now Available

Recipes from the Cooking Contest at the Ho’oulu ka ’Ulu Breadfruit Festival Saturday, September 24 at the Amy B.H Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in South Kona are now available.

The Cooking Contest was organized by Sonia Martinez (http://www.soniatasteshawaii.com/) and Olelo pa’a Ogawa (http://www.glowhawaii.com) and was an exciting and inspiring event. There were 29 different entries submitted in the Appetizer, Soups/Salads/Side Dishes, Main Dish/Entree and Desserts categories. The contest rules called for original recipes featuring breadfruit as the main ingredient.

The beautifully set tables also carried the theme with tablecloths printed in a bold ulu pattern, displaying everything from summer rolls, chowder, tamales, ulu pound cake served with ulu ice cream, even burgers and ulu corn beef patties and many other delicious dishes.

The panel of five judges included chefs Mark Tsuchiyama of Hualalai Resort, Olelo pa’a Ogawa of Glow Hawaii, Jacqueline Lau of Roy’s Restaurants, food writer and cookbook author Sonia R. Martinez, and KITV weekend anchor Pamela Young.

Top winners in the competition were:

Best of Show & 1st Place Dessert: Ulu tart by Ann Sutherland of Kailua, Kona.

Healthiest Choice & 1st Place Main Dish/Entree: Ulu Tamales with Coleslaw & Salsa by Kua O Ka La New Century Public Charter School and their culinary kumu Mariposa Blanco of Pahoa, Puna.

First Place Appetizer: Ulu Summer Rolls - Ann Sutherland of Kailua- Kona.

First Place Soup/Salad/Side Dish: Ulu Salad by Nader "Nanoa" Parsia of Kailua-Kona.

Trees That Feed Foundation Launches Haiti Breadfruit Projects

The Trees That Feed Foundation is now establishing breadfruit tree planting projects in Haiti. Volunteers from the Chicago area have helped establish a roof top nursery at Three Angels Children’s Relief (orphanage, school, and medical clinic) in Port au Prince. Three shipments of trees have been received and are doing well.

The Breadfruit Revolution Begins in Africa

The Breadfruit Institute has launched its first collaborative breadfruit program in Africa working with the Hunger Alliance of Ghana under the leadership of Nana Ayim Poahwah. This project has been in the planning stages for nearly a year and on 13 October 2011, the first 1,000 trees were delivered to Ghana by Garry Grueber of Global Breadfruit.

The trees will be cared for in the nursery of the Crops Research Institute - Agricultural Research Station at Bunso, and then distributed to farmers and research stations for monitoring of growth, production, and yields. Trees will also be planted at urban and rural homesteads, at public schools, in other community plantings, and on small farm forest and field plots.

"The trees will be admired and observed in the general course of life around small and medium-sized towns and their rural environs." Nana Poakwah.

The Institute wishes to thank Dr. Jeff Marck for his tireless efforts to incite a breadfruit revolution in Africa, Mr. Poakwah, Josh Schneider and Garry Grueber of Global Breadfruit. We are especially grateful for the support of an anonymous donor who made this project possible.

Maafala Breadfruit Tree Planted at Kings House, Jamaica

The Governor-General of Jamaica planted a Ma'afala breadfruit tree at King's House, assisted by the Custos of Trelawny. This Samoan variety was planted as part of major initiative spearheaded by the Trees That Feed Foundation working with the Kingston Rotary Club and other local organizations. Their goal is to have a breadfruit tree in every backyard in Jamaica.

Breadfruit Trees Available at NTBG South Shore Visitors Center

Ma'afala breadfruit trees are available for sale during Ohana Day at the NTBG Southshore Visitors Center on Sunday October 2. These attractive, healthy trees begin bearing in 2-3 years and have a compact, branching growth habit.

Price: $35 with discounts available for multiple tree purchase.

Hours of operation for the Visitor Center are 8:30am-5:00pm.

Every Sunday is Ohana day which means any individual with a Hawaii I.D. is more than welcome to tour the gardens that day. Allerton Garden tours require a reservation--on most occasions--but walk ins are welcome, depending on availability.

With McBryde self guided tours, guests can arrive 15 min. prior to the tour ( self guided tours begin at 9:30am and every bottom of the hour until 2:30pm).

Breadfruit Festival - September 24, 2011 SAVE THE DATE

The Hawai'i Homegrown Food Network, the Breadfruit Institute and Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden are presenting the Breadfruit Festival - Ho'oulu ka 'Ulu at the Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in South Kona on Saturday, September 24, 2011 from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm.

The Festival is free and open to the public.

Breadfruit-inspired food will highlight the festivities with chefs demonstrating how to make various delicious breadfruit dishes and giving out samples to taste. A local food buffet featuring breadfruit will be presented. Members of the public are invited to enter the Breadfruit Cooking Contest with their own favorite recipes.

The Festival will feature many Hawaiian and Pacific Islander cultural activities using 'ulu, including preparing poi, making tapa from bark, preparation techniques from the Micronesian island of Satawal, and carving a Hawaiian pahu (drum). Cultural experts will give talks on the culture, history and mythology of 'ulu in Hawai'i. Other cultural activities include 'ulumaika, lei making, and quilting featuring 'ulu motifs.

There will be workshops on breadfruit propagation, tree care and maintenance, economic opportunities and other topics.

An art exhibit will feature breadfruit-inspired works from the Festival fine art and youth art contests. Ma'afala (Samoan) and Hawaiian varieties of breadfruit trees will be available for sale.

In the week leading up to the Breadfruit Festival, the Keauhou Resort will celebrate the "Taste of 'Ulu" by featuring gourmet dishes in its resort restaurants and at the Keauhou Farmers Market.

Youth Art Contest Celebrating Breadfruit

The Ho'oulu ka 'Ulu - Revitalizing Breadfruit in Hawai'i Youth Art Contest is a part of the educational outreach associated with the 2011 Breadfruit Festival, celebrating the beauty of the tree and fruit as well as the rich cultural heritage and future role of 'ulu in Hawai'i.

The contest is open to all youth artists in Grades 1-12. Entrants must be a full-time residents of Hawai'i County and must be affiliated with a school, home school group or organization to enter, as the school/organization needs to pre-judge the entries for submission.

The artwork of the 12 Youth Art Contest winners will be displayed at the Breadfruit Festival on September 24, 2011 at the Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden.

Caren Loebel-Fried Wins Breadfruit Festival Fine Art Contest

Caren Loebel-Fried was named winner of the Ho'oulu ka 'Ulu - Revitalizing Breadfruit in Hawai'i Art Contest at the Donkey Mill Art Center in Holualoa on Thursday, August 11, 2011.

The winning piece, "The Gift of Ku," is a print the artist hand-pulled from a carved linoleum block, printed on Kozo, a Japanese rice paper, and hand-colored with inks. Caren is a second-generation carver and learned the art of block printing from her mother. Her art is inspired by the natural world of Hawai'i and the legends told long ago by the people who settled there. Caren has written and illustrated six award-winning books for children and adults on the legends of Hawai'i. The contest judges chose the piece due to its powerful rendering of the legend of Ku, who in a time of famine transformed himself into a breadfruit tree in order to feed his family and community. Contest judges felt that this message was in alignment with the Breadfruit Festival's goal of promoting breadfruit as a culturally appropriate food source to enhance food security in Hawai'i.

Artist Reception Showcases Breadfruit-Inspired Art

The Donkey Mill Art Center in Holualoa, Big Island, Hawaii will host an Artist reception and educational program that features the finalists in the Ho'oulu ka 'Ulu - Revitalizing Breadfruit in Hawaii Art Contest.

Thursday, August 11 from 6-9pm.

The reception and evening program is free and open to the public and is a potluck with a focus on breadfruit dishes and other locally grown foods. Judges will select and announce the winners of the Art Contest at the reception. One winning piece will be selected to be reproduced into a collectable poster commemorating the Ho'oulu ka 'Ulu project, which will be sold at the Breadfruit Festival and beyond as a fundraiser for the festival and project. Prizes will be awarded for best artwork.

Andrea Dean and Craig Elevitch will present the Ho'oulu ka 'Ulu project and show video clips of Hawaiian cultural experts relating the culture and history of breadfruit in Hawaii. Also available for viewing will be The Wayfaring exhibit by artist Gary Eoff featuring recreations of the voyaging tools and implements taken aboard deep-sea canoes as equipment essential to the survival of early oceanic explorers.

The art contest is part of the educational outreach associated with the Breadfruit Festival-Ho'oulu ka 'Ulu which will be held at the Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in South Kona on Saturday, September 24, 2011. The contest celebrates the beauty of the breadfruit tree and fruit as well as the rich cultural heritage and future role of 'ulu in Hawaii.

The Ho'oulu ka 'Ulu - Revitalizing Breadfruit in Hawaii Art Contest is being presented by Hawaii Homegrown Food Network, Breadfruit Institute of the National Tropical Botanical Garden, Amy B.H. Innovation of the Week: Taking Breadfruit From the Lab in to the Field

The work being done by NTBG's Breadfruit Institute has been recognized as 'Innovation of the Week' for the week of June 23 by the WorldWatch Institute.

In it's Nourishing the Planet project article 'Taking Breadfruit from the Lab into the Field', WorldWatch writes "The [Breadfruit] Institute is not only conserving the crop's diversity, but it's also tapping into its potential to help alleviate global hunger, while protecting the environment." "As the cost of fuel and fertilizer rises, improving access to crops that are sustainable over the long run is more important than ever before."

The Nourishing the Planet project assesses the state of agricultural innovations-from cropping methods to irrigation technology to agricultural policy-with an emphasis on sustainability, diversity, and ecosystem health, as well as productivity. The project aims to both inform about global efforts to eradicate hunger and to raise the profile of these efforts.

Breadfruit Festival - September 24 SAVE THE DATE

Rooted in the Past and Bearing Fruit for the Future

Hawaii Homegrown Food Network, the Breadfruit Institute, and Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden are presenting the Breadfruit Festival at the Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in South Kona on Saturday, September 24, 2011 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

The Garden will also be holding a dedication for its new visitor center at 12:00 noon on the Festival day. The Festival and dedication are free and open to the public.

The Breadfruit Festival celebrates the rich culture of breadfruit (ulu) in Hawaii and the Pacific, raises awareness about the importance of breadfruit for food security and teaches about the many delicious ways to prepare breadfruit.

Activities will include: cooking demonstrations by local celebrity chefs, food booths featuring breadfruit and other local favorites, the "I Love Breadfruit" Cook-Off Contest, Hawaiian and Pacific Islander cultural activities, talks on the culture and history of breadfruit, quilting demonstrations, tapa making, ulu poi making, workshops on breadfruit propagation and tree care, and art exhibit, and more.

Breadfruit Global Hunger Initiative

The Breadfruit Institute is engaged in an initiative to respond to critical global food security issues by expanding plantings of good quality breadfruit varieties in tropical regions. The institute manages the world's largest collection of breadfruit, conserving over 120 varieties. The Breadfruit Institute has developed effective methods to propagate and distribute millions of breadfruit plants of selected varieties that can provide a year-round supply of nutritious fruit. This initiative aims to disseminate breadfruit plants to support more sustainable agriculture, increase crop diversity, and enhance food security in the tropics. The Breadfruit Institute is seeking partners to help fund this work and help distribute trees to farmers.

Breadfruit's Potential for Food and Reforestation

Haiti Breadfruit Project Launches

GET TO KNOW A BREADFRUIT - MA'AFALA

You're going to hear a lot about this variety of breadfruit in the future. Ma'afala is a popular Samoan variety and widely grown in Polynesia and some of the atolls of Micronesia. It has never been distributed outside of Oceania until recently.

The Institute has partnered with Global Breadfruit (www.globalbreadfruit.com) to produce plants in large quantities using in vitro propagation methods and will distribute this variety globally.

We have pilot projects underway in Honduras with Sustainable Harvest International (www.sustainableharvest.org) and Jamaica with the Trees That Feed Foundation (www.treesthatfeed.org). We will soon send plants to Haiti in collaboration with the ARN Foundation (www.signahaiti.com/signa/arn-foundation).

This productive tree has a more compact form than most varieties of breadfruit and the fruit contains good levels of protein and other important nutrients. It is delicious in traditional and contemporary dishes and can also be dried into nutritious gluten-free flour.

New Breadfruit Trees Planted in Jamaica for Food Security

Trees That Feed Foundation is working with the Breadfruit Institute and Global Breadfruit to introduce new breadfruit varieties to Jamaica. The first shipment of 50 plants of the variety, Ma'afala, was shipped in December 2009 and were field planted in summer 2010.

There is great interest in breadfruit for food security initiatives and to supply the local and export fresh fruit markets, for manufacture of gluten-free flour, and for breadfruit chips and other products.

Breadfruit Bounty Cookoff during 'Ohana Day

The Breadfruit Institute of the National Tropical Botanical Garden is pleased to announce the first Breadfruit Bounty Cookoff on Kaua'i. The event will take place at the Southshore Visitors Center during the monthly 'Ohana Day.

A number of creative and tasty recipes have been entered for judging. In addition to the Cookoff, there will be activities for the children, a presentation by Dr. Diane Ragone, Director of the Breadfruit Institute, and the chance to sample entries.

Newsweek Article - Breadfruit to the Rescue

A team of researchers led by Diane Ragone of the Breadfruit Institute at the National Tropical Botanical Garden in Kauai, Hawaii, has discovered how to propagate breadfruit en masse to ship to regions in Central America and Africa where it would grow best (and where hunger rates are highest).

A catalog of over 100 breadfruit varieties with photographs and detailed descriptions is now available at http://ntbg.org/breadfruit/collection/

The entire catalog can be searched using a list of variety names, by geographical location, or by using a form (http://ntbg.org/breadfruit/database/search/) with options for species, variety name, geographic orgin, fruit weight, fruit shape, seed number, skin texture, and other parameters.
